Tips on How to Stay Healthy Whilst
on Holiday Abroad - Including Holiday Food Safety Tips
Our tips on how to stay healthy whilst on holiday abroad. This information
includes our holiday food safety tips and has been based on our many years
of travelling.
- Do not buy local medications unless you are familiar with them or on the recommendation
of a Pharmacist.
- Avoid having ice in your drinks unless it has been made from bottled or purified
water.
- Do not SCUBA dive within the last 24 hours as you may suffer the 'bends',
which may be fatal in some instances!
- If you are planning to climb hills or mountains make sure you have done some
preparation.
- Read your travel insurance documents before you use any equipment, ie Bungee
Jump, Banana Boat, Water Ski etc. You may be surprised what you are not covered
for!
- Use flip-flops in public bathing and patio areas to avoid picking up any
fungal infections.
- We have found that Mosquitoes do not like the (undetectable to humans) smell
of vitamin B1 / Thiamine, so taking 1000mg per day in two or three doses daily
, ward off the little beasties - Start taking the tablets two weeks before you
travel.
- If you are in a high risk area from mosquitos, take extra precautions: wear
long sleeves and long trousers, particularly at sunset.
- Do not drink tap water - even if you boil it you may still ingest heavy metals
and other nasties.
- When it comes to food - Boil it, cook it, peel it or forget it! If you do
buy 'street food' make sure it has just come off the heat and not been lying
around for any length of time.
- Wear sun block and sunglasses in the tropics or stay out of the sun.
- Even though it may not be 'the law' - wear seat belts / crash helmets that
fit.
- Do not assume that traffic will stop at traffic lights or pedestrian crossings
to let you cross the road!
- Make sure bottled water has the seal in tact before you buy from street vendors.
